At Gotemba by 8:00. On the road by 8:15. Brisk morning at 5C (according to my Garmin). Began climbing up to the pass but took a couple detours over towards the cemetery (12-21km mark) to collect a tile or two then got up and over the pass, and descended down to Yamanakako. Circled Yamanakako, picking up a couple more tiles and treated to some beautiful views of Fuji, made even more beautiful by the autumn leaves of the trees along the cycle path.
I had some hiking ahead of me so pushed a bit to get to the base of the first trail (55km mark). Up and back down in about 45 minutes of hiking, tile bagged. Pretty easy trail.
Now, on to hike #2.
Climbing again, but once I got over the pass, it was mostly downhill from then on. At the pass (61km mark), I stopped to take a couple pictures. The leaves were gorgeous. From this point on, the road was closed to vehicles, so I had a long descent on really good road, no traffic, and beautiful fall colors. Doesn’t get any better than that.
Got to the base of hike #2, (about the 70km mark) parked the bike and hiked up and back. Pretty good trail all the way. A bit rocky and a couple small stream crossings (able to cross w/o getting my shoes wet) but otherwise uneventful.
Back on the bike about 50 minutes later. Continued the descent on leaf covered roads, enjoying the sights.
Although it was getting late, I wanted to collect a tile I had missed once before. So instead of going straight to Otsuki, I headed east on 35. I got to the turn off of Route 35 and start ascending. This was a mistake. I started too late and lost the sun soon after I started. Also, there was a water crossing that I had to wade through, so now I have wet and cold feet. The trail is rough and I had to walk a lot. Plus, except for my bike light, it is very dark. Finally, I reach the end of the trail. Only 100-200 meters to go but the trail is nonexistent and all I see ahead when I shine the light, are fallen trees and boulders. What would be a difficult scramble in daylight is a ‘tile too far’ for me in the dark with no discernable trail to follow. Not something I wanted to do in the dark at 6:00 pm. with no backup on Halloween night. Sadly, I turn around.
I descended in fairly good time, crossed the slimy rocks again, pedaled on with wet cold feet and reached Otsuki about 7:00 pm.
